Why Worry?

First, let me begin by wishing you all a Happy New Year!!!! I hope you all are off to a great start for this new year, setting goals and making plans to accomplish something this year.

So, yeah…2014 was a doozy! Lol! Seriously, I am grateful the Lord kept me and blessed me with the grace to see another year but I would be remised  if I didn’t take a moment to reflect (cautiously…no need to beat a dead horse) on 2014.

You see, 2014 for me was much like the Winters we have here in Ohio. If you don’t know, Ohio weather can be a little CRAZY, to say the least. All jokes aside, one day its bright, sun is shining and you are up and feeling good about the day. The next day…its gray, windy and raining cats and dogs. (Side note: I never understood what that saying actually meant…one day, I will take the time to research the meaning behind raining furry animals).

Totally sidetracked, where was I? Ok, yes the CRAZY weather of Ohio. Let me not forget the creme-de-la creme…Ohio Snow. Ohio Snow sucks – plain and simple. Its frigid cold and most of the time the flakes are huge and wet and they cause an absolute mess for travelers who completely forget how to drive once this wet mess hits the pavement. {inserting a moment to catch my breath} Can you feel the frustration rising…but I digress. Winter anywhere is tough, which also includes the winter season of our lives.

Winter is the season where it seems like nothing is happening. The season where you take one step forward and end up taking two steps back. The season where challenges are raging like storms. The season where you feel alone, depressed and discouraged. Winter is just flat out tough.

To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the season.

~Ecclesiastes 3:1

Well, 2014 and even this early part of 2015, feels much like the season of Winter. Closed doors, missed opportunities, challenges around every corner, visits to the hospital, one trip to the funeral home and a fiery microwave (true story for another time). But in the midst of all this blizzard like chaos, there is the peacefulness of God’s Grace that encourages me every day. I know that through this Grace I can (and must) continue to PRESS FORWARD despite the rage and fierceness of the storm because I realize that God is more than the Blessing and the Grace…he is also the storm. If he is the storm, than Why Worry? Why doubt? Why get wrapped up in the Winters of our lives when he is the ONE that has orchestrated this very moment you and I are sharing right now. It is this Winter season that will change the trajectory of my life. It is in this season that I am learning the virtue of patience, timing, faith and peace.

You don’t need everything to be right in your life in order to be all right. You don’t need happiness in your life in order to choose happiness. You don’t need money to start dreaming. You don’t need an education to pursue your dream. You don’t need a partner to realize your dream. The one thing you do need is God. Allow him to come into your life and establish some unshakeable roots.

I believe real roots are established in the Winter; the deeper the root, the stronger the plant. On the contrary, the more shallow the root, the weaker the plant. Think about the kind of life you want to have. Do you want to spend your life being blown around by the wind and storms of life? Do you want to continue to feel hopeless and helpless every time something bad happens? OR do you want to know the true promises of God, which tell you:

  •   That you are the head and not the tail; I am above only and not beneath.~ Deuteronomy 28:13
  •  That you can do all things through Christ who Strengthens You. ~Philippians 4:13
  • That with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. ~Matthew 19:26
  • That we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. ~2 Corinthians 4:16
  • That God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7

These are only a few of the promises that God has told us are ours, if only we believe. So, do not be discouraged if you’re in a rut (a.k.a. winter season) right now. Know that this time in your life has meaning and value. Don’t spend your time wishing this season away because Spring and Summer will be here before you know it. Instead, take time to establish your roots in the ground by putting in the work and by reading the word of God everyday. Step out on Faith and get ready to see where the Lord and his Grace take you next!

Until next time!

Remember to Live for the Journey!
